An old turkey guide I once hunted with in Arizona used to talk about
hunting and fishing trips as “building memories.” if ever a trip
qualified, it was the one last summer out of Prince Rupert on the
converted tug Tsekoa (pronounced “Secoa” and meaning “sea gull”). It
was an adventure of memories from the get go.
“I’m so excited Poppa,” said my 17-year-old granddaughter Katlyn as we
turned down the hill into Prince Rupert. It was the umpteenth time she
had said this since I had picked her up from her home in Prince George.
She was going on her first salmon fishing trip on a floating lodge —
actually a neatly refurbished tug — off Prince Rupert.
We had already had an exciting start to our trip with a major vehicle
breakdown at Kitwanga and a ride to Terrace in the tow truck. After an
unscheduled overnight in Terrace and an interesting morning at the Jeep
dealership, we were finally driving into Prince Rupert.
