Fishing Canada's True North

It’s an unusual angler who packs it in before midnight during a fishing trip, but in this northern territory, there’s something about the long days that literally energizes you. Since it’s really hard to go to sleep when it’s still light out, it’s common to fish until midnight and be up again at 5:00 a.m. for another round of fishing.

With convenient daily flights from Vancouver to Whitehorse by Air Canada and Air North, many British Columbians are close enough to cash in on fishing trips. For the more adventuresome, there’s the Alaska Highway, also known as the Alcan, which starts in Dawson Creek and officially ends at the Delta Junction in Alaska, a distance of 2,237 km. The distance from Dawson Creek to Whitehorse, the Yukon’s capital and staging area for most trips to backcountry lodges, is only 1,329 km.

I’ve visited three fishing lodges in the Yukon during the past few years, including Dalton Trail Lodge, Kluane Wilderness Lodge and Tincup Wilderness Lodge. So far, I’ve fly-fished for lake trout, Arctic grayling, rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, rainbow trout and northern pike in the wilds of the Yukon. I’ve fished for lake trout with jigs and other lures in this angler paradise. Its unique fishing opportunities are what bring me back each time.
